What I Wish I’d Known Before My Kids Started School
Is your little one starting primary school? In this chatty podcast-style episode, I’m talking through the practical, emotional and sensory side of getting ready for school — not just the uniform, labels and school bags, but the big feelings, new routines, drop-off wobbles, sensory surprises, school communication, social media consent and what to do if you have neurodiversity concerns. As a mum of four children with autism, I’ve learned that starting school is not just about buying the right bits and hoping for the best. It’s about helping your child know what to expect, reducing the unknowns where we can, building tiny independence skills, communicating clearly with school and giving both them and us a bit more support through a really big transition. This is not about making starting school perfect. It’s about making it feel a little calmer, a little safer and a little less overwhelming for everyone.
